FDSC AGM and Philip German’s Farewell as DC

Hi All

Thursday July 11th – Start Time: 8pm

This year this date for the AGM is very important, for two reasons.

Apart from the normal business required of an AGM this year we have our brand new extension to show off and after 9 years as our DC Philip German is stepping down and being replaced as DC by Ann-Marie Vinnicombe.

Philip has been an important part of our district for these 9 years as DC, steering and helping to shape the way the district is run and operated, making the Farnham District Scouts one of the better districts and certainly prosperous with over 1,000 members.

We will all be sorry to see Philip go, but he is staying involved with district as the Campsite Warden.

The extension and upgrades to the centre were completed at the end of April this year.  The centre is enhanced greatly with new toilets, shower, disabled facilities, upgraded kitchen and a new first aid room/office.

The AGM is open to ALL leaders and group committee members in the district, as well as helpers, to attend and given it is Philip’s “leaving” as well we really would like, or love, as many members of the district scouting movement to come to the AGM to help see Philip off and also welcome the new DC.  It’s also a chance to take a look around if you have not seen the new facilities.

We have a finger buffet, so you won’t starve!  We also have all types fo refreshments.  Like a glass of wine?  We have some.  Tea/Coffee we have this too.  Soft drinks?  Yep….

So please do come to the AGM and see Philip off.  We really would like to see you there.

What Scouts Wear

FROM The Scout Association: (this is open to adults and children)

What Scouts wear. If you haven’t yet had your say on our current uniform and its future direction, head to scouts.org.uk/whatwewear to take part.

We want everyone to get the chance to take part. Views on variation to suit the needs of Sea Scouts and Air Scouts – and align with faiths and nations – are especially encouraged.

Please share the link with parents/carers so they can give permission for their young people to take part, and get involved themselves.

Remember: No decision has been made at this stage, and there are no immediate changes to uniform. If changes are proposed in the future, we’ll let you know as soon as possible and make sure the process is gradual.

DC’s Newsletter May 2019

Hi District

This newsletter goes out to all leaders and adult members, but it doesn’t get to parents and children so please can you pass on any relevant info, or just send them a copy.

Garners Goes Bananas.

Well we have moved into the Activity Centre and I would like to thank the team at 360 Construction for finishing just in time for Family Camp, they did a great job.

The Mayor declared the building open as part of St Georges Day  Celebrations and we toasted with tea and doughnuts.

Still some fund raising to go, about £10,000.00 will finish it off and settle our debts.

Thank you to all those who have helped with the project and raised funds.

Special thanks to Matt Saker whose marathon run has made us £4,500.00 and the leaders at the 12th whose cyclathon raised over £600.00

Family Camp

Was great!

High winds meant we couldn’t have all the bouncy castles, but I think we were better off without them, all the youngsters seemed to have enough to with the more traditional Scout activities.

Climbing, Shooting, Archery, Canoeing, Cross bows, Branding, Backwoods cooking, Hot tub, Ballisters, Aerial runway, Silent Disco, Craft, Raft making, tin can alley, marathon, bingo, campfire singing and Taiko Drumming. (Did I forget anyone?)

Hanging out, eating cake, home made sausage rolls and drinking hot chocolate.

Nice clean toilets and nice well-behaved children (adults??).

This is all made possible by a big team of helpers and organisers, thank you.

Quiz

Thank you Vicky Hiorns for your fiendish quiz is wasn’t a fix that my brother in law won it!

St Georges Day

We were joined by Waverley and Farnham Mayors , our County Chairman Martin Gerrard and the address by Jacqueline Drake Smith was both relevant and amusing. Farnham Scout band had a lot of support from Farnham Town Band, thank you.

Training

Congratulations to wood badge recipients, Steve Bailey, Ant Cook, Simon Lomas-Clarke, Tony Marshall and Steve Shepherd. There are more on the way.

There is a minibus course for any leaders wanting to use one for Summer Camp 20th June 7pm at Garners Field, email me if you are interested.

Campsite

Campsite is very busy at this time of year and the Monday crew have lots to do. Thanks to the climbing instructors who give up their time teaching campers from in and outside the District.

A note from Colette Grist SL at the 8ths

I thought you would be interested to know that a team of 6 of my Scouts took part in the County Expedition Challenge at the weekend.  They did amazingly well in a very tough challenge and achieved a Silver Award.  I am very proud of them.

Well done Scouts you look very happy!

Queens Scout

Here is Millie Deere at the presentation in Windsor Castle, she’s the happy one!

We also had a Queen Scout  presentation at St Georges Day to Stuart Duffel who is a Scout Network member

Queens Scout is the pinnacle of Scout achievement well done Stuart and Millie.

Long Service Award.

Sue Croucher has served 30 years most of them as Akela of Tiger pack at the 5ths. Sue is standing down at the end of this term, she has invested hundreds of boys in that time. Sue must be the most loved lady in The Bourne.

AGM

Our Annual General Meeting is on 11th July, 8pm at Garners. This is my my last official event before handing over to Ann Marie so I would love to see all my friends.

Painters are in at Garners

Floors are going down this week and we are on course for Family Camp. Most of the builder’s rubbish has gone and the Monday Crew are setting about titivating the outside areas.

Garners Goes Bananas

We are getting there with the fundraising only need another £20,000

Thanks to Adam Meara, Adam Chambers, Rick Lawrence and Glen Tofts all leaders from the 12th who entered Farnham Cyclethon and raised over £500 for Bananas.

Thanks also to Matt Saker a leader at the 8ths who is running The London Marathon in aid of Scout charities including 50% to Bananas.

Matt is trying to break the Guinness World Record for the marathon run in Scout uniform. Watch out for him on TV and more importantly go to his funding site and sponsor him.

Matt says..

“Many of you will know I’m a keen runner….fewer will be aware that in my spare time I help to run my local Scout group.  Although at a little over 2 hours the marathon world record is perhaps a little beyond me(!), in 4 weeks’ time I will be putting on my Scouts uniform (see picture below) for the Virgin London Marathon in an attempt to break the current Guinness World Record for running a marathon in full Scouts uniform, which stands at a very challenging 2 hours 58 mins 44 secs.

The money I raise from my World Record attempt will go to the Scouts Association Nationally, which helps 460,000 boys and girls in the UK from every background to develop the values, self-belief and faith in others that will help them mature into confident, resilient and active adults.

Locally, half the money raised, will go towards our local Scout Activity Centre Building project at Garners Field, Farnham, Surrey.

No pressure at all, but if you’d like to sponsor me in this attempt then please follow the link below.

 All contributions gratefully received.

 Thank You

 Matt ”

‘Outstanding services to Farnham’ celebrated

The worthy recipients of this year’s Services to Farnham awards were celebrated at a glittering ceremony

FRIENDS, family and local dignitaries packed into the Farnham Town Council chamber on Monday night to celebrate the outstanding public service of 12 community heroes.

The 12th annual Services to Farnham awards, sponsored by Tindle Newspapers Ltd, saw much-deserved recognition heaped on an array of figures from all fields of town life.

Celebrated achievements ranged from the establishment of Farnham Hospital’s pioneering integrated care hub to empowering disadvantaged children through dance, orchestrating Farnham’s Remembrance Sunday parade and increasing opportunities for young people through the scouting and cadet movements.

Each recipient was nominated for the award by a member of the public, colleague or family member, with the final shortlist endorsed by councillors at the full council meeting in January.

Led by Vic on vocals and piano the band play a set of “swing” songs (including some “Rat Pack” favourites) associated with the likes of classic singers Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Sammy Davis Jr. along with newer interpreters such as Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr. The band also mix in latin, rhythm & blues and rock’n’roll from Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and others. Irresistible toe tapping rhythms!
