Why this approach?

Most adventurous activities for water involve considerable training effort and experience, typically in support of programme delivery on major waterways to the open sea. However, in the younger sections, the norm is often to provide “taster sessions” where an activity is offered for 30 minutes in ultra-safe controlled conditions, and where variables such as the participation of non-swimmers and full emersion can be controlled and mitigated quickly. As a result, the district is offering training and restricted permit assessment so that these simple taster sessions can be led by section leadership teams with adequate and appropriate safety cover.

What is required?

• Participation in an on-line water activities, safety and POR workshop Sunday 12th September 7PM
• Attendance at a practical session at Garners field the morning of Saturday 18th September 10AM

• Lead a hands-on practical session that will be assessed per discipline assessment check lists,
• If successful, a restricted permit recommendation to deliver canoe, kayak and rafting activities at Garners Field.

What is the point?

• Really simple: More adventure, more fun, better programmes, enhanced member retention and a leader recruitment opportunity!

After this, what next?

• If you know you want to do more in a specific discipline, or even have existing certification, skills and knowledge but have been “out of the game” for a while, the district will provide opportunities for you to refresh, re-certify or up-skill to the level you want. In the past 24 months alone, more than 50 leaders in the district have qualified to offer activities from Shooting to Scuba Diving and from Narrow boating to Archery!
