Wood Badges

Since September 1919 adult volunteers in the Scouts have been awarded the Wood Badge on the completion of their leader training.

The current training is module driven in a combination of courses, 1:1 sessions, workbooks and validation of practical skills; drawing from the leaders life knowledge and experience.

It is mandatory that a leader complete the training within 3 years of taking on a role; if a leader changes role they have to revalidate certain modules of the training and additional modules if their role is a ‘managerial’ role(GSL,ADC).

Please discuss with your Training Adviser to progress your training. Wood Badge Training Link

HQ process applications throughout the year and issues Wood Badge Beads and Certificates 4 times a year.

Farnham District Scouts Volunteer RYA Safety Boat Course

Volunteers from across Farnham District Scouts performed their RYA Safety Boat Course at Hawley Lake at the weekend, necessitating extensive submergence just to cool down in the blistering 30+ degree heat.

The five volunteers, all of whom support the district water activities programme in one form or another, trailed their skills in dinghy capsize recovery, emergency communication, canoe re-floating and Standup Paddleboard recovery amongst others.

Congratulations to Tony Marshall, Bill Weller, Chris Hollidge, Colin Bland and county colleague Colin Scarff who are now prepped up to perform senior dinghy instructor and powerboat instructor qualifications.

Thank you to Dominic Getting for organising the water courses.

First Response Training

1st Aid is required for all volunteer leader roles and no session/activity can take place without a volunteer with a valid first response qualification.

There is now a variety of ways to met the requirements including F2F min. 6 hour course, Zoom sessions, e-learning and F2F practical/online or a recognised 1st aid qualification.

Courses are run across Scouting and it is the volunteers’ responsibility to find a course that suits them.

In Farnham District we are planning to put on 3 courses per year Jun; Oct; Feb, this is likely to be with an external provider and each is of 12 participants.

We are looking to start in June with a blended format; e-learning and then F2F practical session – the e-learning is designed by Hampshire Scouts and takes around 2.5 hours with a certificate which will be needed to attend the practical session.

The e-learning is transferable between our own practical sessions as well as those of other counties.

District Update – It’s the End of Term (July 2021)

So thank you to everyone who has given 100% and got our Scouts out and about again, I have visited a few and it is fantastic to see everyone enjoying themselves.

Good luck to those about to embark on Summer Camps.

So, what does 19th July mean for Scouting…..we are still Yellow, restrictions on numbers is lifted but It’s important to remember that we’re still in the middle of the pandemic and we all have the duty to make sure we’re following the letter and spirit of the guidance. Although there is no longer a legal requirement for many things, as Scouts, with a duty of care to others and to young people, we recommend and expect the application of good hygiene and covid-safe approaches to all our meetings, events, activities and residential experiences.

Well Done Scorpions

While out and about in Farnham town centre, a patrol of 6 Scorpion Explorers Scouts found a member of the public that had a knife wound – they controlled the situation and used their emergency procedure knowledge to provide 1st aid, call an ambulance and remain calm and productive.

Well done to all those involved in the incident this really shows what #Skills for Life is all about.
