District Update – It’s the End of Term (July 2021)

So thank you to everyone who has given 100% and got our Scouts out and about again, I have visited a few and it is fantastic to see everyone enjoying themselves.

Good luck to those about to embark on Summer Camps.

So, what does 19th July mean for Scouting…..we are still Yellow, restrictions on numbers is lifted but It’s important to remember that we’re still in the middle of the pandemic and we all have the duty to make sure we’re following the letter and spirit of the guidance. Although there is no longer a legal requirement for many things, as Scouts, with a duty of care to others and to young people, we recommend and expect the application of good hygiene and covid-safe approaches to all our meetings, events, activities and residential experiences.

Well Done Scorpions

While out and about in Farnham town centre, a patrol of 6 Scorpion Explorers Scouts found a member of the public that had a knife wound – they controlled the situation and used their emergency procedure knowledge to provide 1st aid, call an ambulance and remain calm and productive.

Well done to all those involved in the incident this really shows what #Skills for Life is all about.

District Update – June 2021

We are at Yellow risk level; hi-lights from 21st June 2021:

– Nights away activities restricted to 30 youth from one section or unit

– Nights away activities restricted to 6 adults

Network remain max 30 non-social programmed activities

– adult only gatherings remain as per Government guidelines – ie. 30 outdoors, 6 indoors

https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/getting-back-together-safely/the-readiness-levels-across-uk-scouts/

NAN (Notification of Nights Away)

All Scouting nights away must approved by the District Commissioner, the NAN form and Risk Assessment should be sent no later than 7 days before the event (preferable ASAP).

Travel

Minibus and coach travel – 2m distances between those traveling is preferred but not always possible, where 2m is not possible then 1m with additional controls is permitted. Where the full use of a method of travel such as minibus is vital to a young person participation then all seats may be occupied but this must be done with additional controls such as face coverings, good hygiene practices, additional ventilation and the journeys kept as limited as possible.

Remember you require permits (valid for 5 yrs) – currently The Scout Association is not issuing these so if you do not have one already you can not use a minibus;

https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/running-your-section/administration/minibus-permits/

If you do not have a Midas qualification then please contact me for approval to drive.

AGM and Social – due to the restrictions above we are postponing the AGM until 22nd July 2021; we will resend the survey nearer the time.

4th Farnham (Tongham) New HQ Under Construction – Funds Needed

After 10 years of fundraising, negotiations, and planning, last week one of our youngest Beavers handed over the keys to the old hut to Daniel the Project Manager for Bentley Contracts who are the main contractor for the new building.

The old hut has served well, it was an old army hut brought up from Kent 64 years ago in 1957 and erected by local volunteers.

The total project budget is £350,000 and so far, £250,000 has been raised enabling the imminent construction of the watertight shell of the building.

Further fundraising for the internal fit out is underway with the committee exploring all sorts of funding and charity avenues.

Scouting has been going on in Tongham since 1908 in various locations including the school and notably a room over the chip shop.

Even the pandemic has not stopped Scouting and all sections have been busy Zooming.

Over Easter a “Garden Camp” was held with youngsters and some oldsters sleeping out and camp cooking in gardens. Now with lock down easing, face to face meetings have just started. We are hoping for a good summer as the old hut is now a building site!

Tongham Scouts, Cubs and Beavers are looking forward to moving into their new HQ hopefully by the end of the year and would be grateful for any financial and practical support to make that happen.

Scouting has been at the heart of the Tongham community since 1908, that’s 113 years!

Our new Headquarters will help ensure our young people can continue to enjoy Scouts for many generations to come.

Garners Field Farnham Scouts

Garners Field – Update

8th August 2020

Garners Field is partially open within the AMBER approved risk assessment attached. Campsite Red to Amber Covid Risk Assessement REV 2

Our Campsite Manager, Ken Powell and his team of volunteers run and maintain the Campsite and they have done a fantastic job during lockdown keeping the Campsite at a high standard of maintenance to ensure safe fun.

The decision has been made that effectively it is only the field, activity trail and shooting range that can be opened for use at this time and risk level.

Anyone using the site must have their own approved COVID-19 Risk Assessment as well as usual activity RA and this must be attached to the booking form – no one is allowed on site without an approved booking for any reason.

https://farnhamscouting.com/website/Campsite/campsite-booking-2019/

This means that the hall, climbing tower and archery wall are not open under this level.

https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/scouts-at-home/getting-everyone-back-together-safely/

Hopefully you will have seen that the climbing tower roof has been replaced and there is further upgrades in the pipeline  – https://farnhamscouting.com/website/climbing-tower-new-roof/

We are also revamping the archery wall, currently it has been dismantled ahead of rebuild – https://farnhamscouting.com/website/garners-field-the-crew-in-action/
