10th Anniversary Camp – 12th Farnham(Wrecclesham)

10th anniversary Camp – 12th Farnham(Wrecclesham)

Happy Anniversary to 12th Farnham (Wrecclesham), which was restarted after over 9 years, 10 years ago by Adam Chambers, Tony Marshall and Maria Finch, who are all still Section Leaders for Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, respectively – thank you for your support and commitment.

The Scout camp, which was open to the whole District, started on Friday with a 5km or 5 mile hike depending who you ask….and continued with a full day of activities on Saturday, a visit from the Mayor of Farnham and a fantastic campfire with skits and songs, Sunday more activities and then lots of clearing up by the leaders.

Well done to all the volunteers who made the weekend a memorable one for all.

Farnham District Scouts – Explorer Belt Award

A huge well done to 6 Farnham District Explorer Scouts who completed and have been awarded the Explorer Belt.

Tom; Fergus; Kiran; Sam; Niamh; Grace; all undertook the challenge of making their own way back to base by walking over at least 150 km in 10 days in Galicia in northern Spain, taking part in 15 projects designed to get them involved in the local communities they walked through – no food or accommodation was pre-provided so they had to plan and budget (they were given a set amount for the whole 10 days) #SkillsforLife.

This is a fantastic opportunity and shows that our Scouts have initiative, resilience and are capable of surviving working together for the common aim.

A big thank you to the support teams.

The Explorer Belt is open to Explorer Scouts (over 16’s) and Network Scouts.

The next one is in Sweden in August 2024

Farnham District Scouts Volunteer RYA Safety Boat Course

Volunteers from across Farnham District Scouts performed their RYA Safety Boat Course at Hawley Lake at the weekend, necessitating extensive submergence just to cool down in the blistering 30+ degree heat.

The five volunteers, all of whom support the district water activities programme in one form or another, trailed their skills in dinghy capsize recovery, emergency communication, canoe re-floating and Standup Paddleboard recovery amongst others.

Congratulations to Tony Marshall, Bill Weller, Chris Hollidge, Colin Bland and county colleague Colin Scarff who are now prepped up to perform senior dinghy instructor and powerboat instructor qualifications.

Thank you to Dominic Getting for organising the water courses.

Farnham District Scouts Volunteer Canoe and Kayaking Permit Training

Farnham District volunteers completed another round of Canoe and Kayak training last weekend in the sun-drenched waters of Hawley Lake, near Farnborough.

Equipped with buoyancy aids and paddles, instructors Stephen Moore, Tim Shellard and Bill Weller put the latest cohort through their paces to achieve British Canoeing’s “Explore” and “Paddle Safely” syllabus, which simultaneously enables a permit to be recommended to take up to 4 scouts each out on sheltered water.

Congratulations to the leaders and explorer young leaders on achieving their qualifications and leadership permits.

First Response Training

1st Aid is required for all volunteer leader roles and no session/activity can take place without a volunteer with a valid first response qualification.

There is now a variety of ways to met the requirements including F2F min. 6 hour course, Zoom sessions, e-learning and F2F practical/online or a recognised 1st aid qualification.

Courses are run across Scouting and it is the volunteers’ responsibility to find a course that suits them.

In Farnham District we are planning to put on 3 courses per year Jun; Oct; Feb, this is likely to be with an external provider and each is of 12 participants.

We are looking to start in June with a blended format; e-learning and then F2F practical session – the e-learning is designed by Hampshire Scouts and takes around 2.5 hours with a certificate which will be needed to attend the practical session.

The e-learning is transferable between our own practical sessions as well as those of other counties.
